About Back 40 Veg

Back40 Veg is run by kids: we are four brothers, aged 8 through 16, and we operate a market garden on our family’s 117-acre heritage farm in Prince Edward County, Ontario.

Our Farm

Our farm is home to a variety of field crops, a re-generating woodlot, and an organically-tended, pesticide-free market garden featuring many varieties of heirloom vegetables, flowers and berries. Our field crops go to Blaine Way Farm, which raises Tamworth Pigs. Our market garden supplies several fine local restaurants and businesses, and a group of loyal customers in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. We give a big shout-out here to Vicki Emlaw and Tim Noxon our mentors at Vicki’s Veggies: we get all our heirloom seedlings from their award-winning farm on Morrison Point Road. We are proud supporters of Slow Food The County and we follow the Slow Food principles of growing good, clean and fair food on our farm.

Our Veg

Back40 Veg is proud to be fine heirloom vegetables selected by some excellent local chefs: Scott Kapitan and Jacqui Vickers of the acclaimed Bloomfield Carriage House, Michael Potters of Angeline’s Restaurant and Chef Laurent of Tati Bistro in Toronto. We are one of many small farms supplying a wide array of produce for the original Buddha Dog, on whose blog Back 40 Veg enjoys “Shiny New Farmer” status. Picton’s Industrial Perk Café and Wellington’s East and Main Bistro have recently added our veg to their menus.

Our Vines

The farm is also home to Back 40 Vines, a small vineyard in which our family grows pinot noir and chardonnay grapes with low yields and careful attention to terroir. We’re members of the Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association, and we encourage you to try the delightful array of fine local wines available at our friends’ and neighbours’ wineries.

Our Future

Back 40 Veg gives forward to other youth projects that improve our world. A portion of all our veggie sales go to support the award-winning Small Change Fund. Please join us by adding your support and “start something big with small change”!
